James Monroe Endorsement Signed on Verso of an Agreement for the Building of the Cumberland Road. The agreement fills one and a half pages of a bifolium, 11.25" x 18", and Monroe's signed endorsement appears on the verso. Original manuscript articles of agreement between "John Holdridge of the one part and David Shriver, Junr duly authorised [sic] in behalf of the United States of the other part... to deliver on that part of the United States Western road comprised in the twenty third, twenty fourth, twenty fifth, and twenty sixth... any quantity of Merchanable [sic] Lime necessary in the construction of all the Bridges, culverts, or other walls which may be thought necessary by the superintendant [sic] of the said road..." Madison signs on the verso, giving his approval of the agreement. Separations at folds, with no loss of paper. Gentle toning and bold ink. Document is housed in a pocket placed on the inside front cover of a book titled Historic Highways, Vol 10, The Cumberland Highway, by Archer Butler Hulbert. Cleveland, Ohio: The Arthur H. Clark Company. 1904.

The Cumberland Road was the first road paid for by the federal government. Built in response to a need to connect the established towns in the east with the western frontier, the road played an important role in western settlement and trade.
