President Monroe writes to his son-in-law on the occasion of the birth of his granddaughter

James Monroe Autographed Letter Signed as President. A one-page 7.75" x 9.75". Washington; May 25, 1824, to Samuel Gouverneur concerning family matters and his recent nomination of Judge William P. Van Ness as an auditor of the Treasury.

In a week or ten days more she will gain strength, we hope, & move about the room. I have today nominated Judge Van Ness 4th auditor of the Treasury. I have done this, without knowledge that he will accept it, but with an assurance given by his brother-hear, that it will be taken by him, as proof of good wishes towards him. I never thought that the augmentation of his salary from #L 600. To #L 3000. Would be an object & in any event [should he decline it] it would facilitate any further appointment which he might have in view, even after my retirement..."

This letter is addressed to Samuel Gouverneur (1799-1865), a lawyer and both a nephew and son-in-law of President Monroe. He was married to Monroe's daughter Marie Hester Monroe in 1820. He served as Monroe private secretary. President Monroe was married to Gouverneur's aunt. At the time this letter was written, William P. Van Ness (1778-1826) was serving as judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. He was confirmed as an auditor of the Treasury Department.

Small period filing docket on verso reads: JM to SLG. 1824. Gouverneur, who died on 2d April 1868, whilst the wife of Grafton D. Spurrier of Balto."

Condition: The letter has horizontal and vertical folds with a small separation at horizontal fold; with creasing throughout. Uneven toning and slight mat burn. Two small tape repairs are evident on verso, as well as archival tape reinforcement at side and bottom edges. Two small mounting remnants at top on verso. The letter is chipped along the right hand edge and bottom, with minor loss which does not affect any text. A few small chips occurring along right edge as well. Together with an engraving of Monroe.

    More Information:

    Dear Samuel

We received your letter by yesterday's mail giving us the gratifying information, that Marie & the child were doing well, & that you & James were also in good health.

To #L 3000. Would be an object & in any event [should he decline it] it would facilitate any further appointment which he might have in view, even after my retirement.   I have not seen the general-no communication took place between him & Judge Southard, who took an interest in his appointment.  Mr. Crawford being seriously indisposed for some days past, I have not seen him.  It may be useful if you or Mr. Tillotson, would see him & confer with him on the subject, to the effect above stated.  Affection & regards attend to you all

                                        Your friend

                                        James Monroe
