    James Monroe Autograph Letter with Clipped Signature Affixed. One page, 7.75" x 9.75"; New York. The date has been removed, but the letter was likely written during the month of December in 1830. Monroe writes saying that he is enclosing "a copy of the oration delivered by Mr, Gouverneur, at the celebration in this city, of the late important revolution in France... We are with Mr. Gouverneur & our daughter Maria, & as well accommodated as we could desire... I never go beyond the circle of the family. On the celebration referd to, I attended for a few minutes, to mark my respect for the government, & likewise for my fellow citizens... " He goes on to send news of his health, "My health is thought to have somewhat improved since my arrival here, but I am still very weak, & being confined to the house & deprived of exercise by almost continued rain. I fear it my recovery will be very slow." The signature has been torn off and paper has been added. A clipped signature has been affixed to replace the missing signature. Together with an imprint titled, "Oration Delivered by Samuel L. Gouverneur on the 26th November, 1830, at Washington Square, before the citizens of New-York: in commemoration of the revolution in France, 1830." The address is 22 printed pages and measures 5" x 8.25".

    Condition: Letter has paper loss, which has been replaced, at the top and bottom left corners, as well as were the place and date and signature have been removed. A clipped signature, "Jas Monroe", has been affixed to the letter. With pencil annotation in the top margin. The address has been disbound from a larger volume, has foxing throughout, and dealer's pricing and annotation on page 3.
