James Monroe Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 7.25" x 5.5"; Washington; April 25, 1817. A letter as president to his creditors: "My flour from Loudoun has been order'd to Alexa., and an instruction given to Mr. Vosse, to pay this note out of its sales. If you will be so kind as to arrange this delay, I will see that it is paid next week." Signed "Jas Monroe."

Monroe owned a large plantation with slaves in Loudoun County, Virginia, and often speculated in land. However, all of his properties were run by overseers, and often mismanaged. Coupled with a lavish lifestyle mandated by being in public office, he was often in debt. The letter offered here is an example of the constant juggling he performed to keep his creditors at bay. This particular letter is written less than 8 weeks after becoming president.

Condition: Matted with a color reproduction of Monroe, and a plaque with a full transcription of the letter, which appears to be housed in a protective sleeve within the mount.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
