Description
James Monroe Autograph Letter Signed "Jas. Monroe." Three pages of a bifolium, 7.5" x 9", Richmond, Virginia, April, 1783. To John Francis Mercer, Philadelphia. In the letter Monroe assures Mercer that he does not think an attack will be made on him in the legislature, but guarantees that he and [Samuel] Hardy will squelch it if it occurs. He regrets Mercer's failure to be re-elected to the [Virginia] legislature and comments at length on the condition of the state at the end of the war. "The era hath now arrived and an important one it is...[whether] independence once measured...will be now adopted whether ye people of the State are to esteem their Independence as a blessing or a curse I trust that a spirit of moderation & wisdom will govern our councils". John Francis Mercer (1759-1821) was a delegate for Virginia to the Continental Congress in 1783 and 1784. During the Revolutionary War he was a captain in the 3rd Virginia Regiment in the Continental Army. He was wounded in the Battle of Brandywine. Accompanied with an engraved portrait of Monroe.Condition: With old smoothed fold creases. Some toning to the paper and with a small repair on the terminal page, not affecting text.
