Description

James Monroe and John Quincy Adams Scallop Top Passport Signed "James Monroe" as president and "John Quincy Adams", as secretary of state. One page of vellum, 11.25" x 15", New York; March 11, 1825. Numbered "40," the passport allows "...the Brig Zephyr of New York... Allen Miner master or commander of the burthen of one hundred seventy nine & 40/95 tons or thereabouts, mounted with Four guns, navigated with Ten men to pass with her Company, Passengers, Goods, and Merchandize, without any hindrance seizure or molestation." Scalloped edge at top. Full paper seal affixed at the bottom left. With maritime vignettes at the top of the document. Countersigned by Jonathan Thompson as Collector.

Condition: Flattened folds with toning at the edges. Small spots of soiling throughout. Mounting material across the top horizontal fold on verso.
