Description

    James Monroe and John Quincy Adams Patent Signed as President and Secretary of State, respectively. Two partially-printed vellum pages, 11" x 14.5"; Washington, May 20, 1822. Acknowledging that "Thomas Barnitt...hath alleged that he has invented a new and useful improvement being a Machine for pressing the Tar out of Hempen or other yarn for manufacturing cordage, called the 'Barnitt Machine'..." and that the U.S. government grants "...for the term of fourteen years...the full and exclusive right and liberty of making, constructing, using and vending to others to be used, the said improvement." Blind embossed seal affixed at lower left. Countersigned by William Wirt as Attorney General of the United States.

    This patent is found in the U. S. patent records and is assigned the number 3,529X. According to the "Directory of American Tool and Machinery Patents," the existence of this patent is unknown: "Most of the patents prior to 1836 were lost in a December 1836 fire. Only 2,000 of the almost 10,000 document were recovered. Little is known about this patent. Only the patent drawing is available."

    Condition: Toning and foxing around edges, darker toning on verso. Flattened vertical and horizontal folds. Boldly signed by both Monroe and Adams.
