    Description

    James Madison Scalloped-Top Sea Passport Signed as president and countersigned by Secretary of State Robert Smith. One partly-printed vellum page, 10.5" x 15.5", New York, May 9, 1809. Both signatures are somewhat faded. The passport allows "the Ship Cuthbert of New York, Daniel Goodwin master or commander, of the burthen of Three hundred eighty seven & 70/95 tons or thereabouts, mounted with four guns, navigated with Twenty-two men to pass with her Company, Passengers, Goods, and Merchandize, without any hindrance." With maritime vignettes and blind embossed seal in bottom left corner. This document, listed as number "120", has folds. Remnants of mounting tape near top of recto and on verso. One wormhole.
