James Madison Scallop Top Ship's Passport Signed. One partially printed page of vellum, 10" x 15.5", New York; September 8, 1810. Mediterranean ship's passport, numbered 279, issued to the "Ship General Gates of New York," captained by James Walkinson and crewed by thirty-one men. It authorized the ship, which had "the burthen of seventy six & 42/95 tons or thereabouts... to pass with her Company, Passengers, Goods, and Merchandize, without any hinderance, seizure of molestation..." Signed by Madison as president, "James Madison." Countersigned by Secretary of State Robert Smith. With maritime vignettes and a blind-embossed paper seal affixed at the lower-left corner. Docketed on verso.

Condition: Lightly wrinkled. Scattered soiling and toning, chiefly located along left margin, affecting seal. Four areas of thinned vellum at engraved vignette, three of which have split approximately .5". Uneven left edge.
