Description

James Madison Letter Signed. One page, 7.75" x 9.75", Montpellier, May 11, 1835, to Thomas G. Addison, in full: "In my present condition crippled as it is by a chronic complaint with the addition of a new inroad on my health, and the addition of both to the enfeebling effects of my very advanced age, I cannot undertake a compliance with your request on the important and controverted [sic] subjects to which it relates. I can only therefore with this apology tender my acknowledgements for the kind sentiments you have expressed and a sincere return of my best wishes for your welfare." Smoothed folds with light, scattered foxing spots. A tear at the left edge has been archivally repaired and does not affect the text.

The "Father of the Constitution" was eighty-four years old at the writing of this letter and suffering from rheumatism. Despite his age, the signature is bold, if a bit shaky. Madison died a year later.
