    Description

James Madison Four-Language Ship's Papers Signed and countersigned by Secretary of Robert Smith. One partly-printed page, 20.5" x 16.5", November 4, 1809. The document is printed in French, Spanish, English, and Dutch and authorizes passage for Benjamin C. Simmons, "master or commander of the ship called the Regulator" then "in the port of New York, bound for Lisbon and laden with Provisions, flour, Pork, Pepper & Staves." Two seals are intact along the left margin and the president's signature is large and bold. This fragile document is toned with some separations at folds. Some tape repairs exist. Nicks and small tears occur along the right edge. The document has been affixed to a slightly larger backing.
