    Description

    James Madison Document Signed as secretary of state. One page, 8" x 10", Washington, March 15, 1805, certifying that "the annexed Writing is a True Copy, duly compared with an authentic Record in this Office; the original Patent having been destroyed, as it is stated, by a late fire in George Town." The blind-embossed paper seal, marred slightly by a tear, rests in the lower left corner. Toned with folds and foxing. Some nicks along edges.
