Description
James Madison Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 8" x 9.75", Montpelier, June 3, 1822, to "P. Menor Esq." concerning notes on the production of tobacco. The body of the letter reads in full:"I have rec'd the copy of your notes on the cultivation and management of Tobacco for which I return my thanks. I should not do justice to the publication were I to say less that that it is the most intelligible and valuable view of the whole process that has ever been given to the public. It will be useful to practical planters and does every thing that could be done to satisfy the curious who are not so."
Five years after leaving office as the fourth president, James Madison writes this letter from his plantation Montpelier, where he cultivated mainly tobacco. Like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, Madison's plantation lost money with tobacco, which sold for steadily declining prices in the early nineteenth century. Toned paper with a previous collector's penciled notations in the lower margin.
