DescriptionJames Madison and James Monroe Scalloped-Top Ship's Passport Signed. One partially printed page of vellum, 10.25" x 15.75", no place; March 15, 1816. Mediterranean ship's passport issued to the Brig Tom of Castine, captained by Jeduthan Upton, and crewed with nine men. Signed by President James Madison and cosigned by James Monroe, Secretary of State. Note written on verso reads, "District & Port of Pensobscot, October 11 th , 1816. Hutson Bishop having taken the oath required by him is at present master of the within vessel in lieu of Jeduthan Upton late master." A Certificate of Authenticity is included with this lot.
Condition: Lightly signed by Madison, but clearly legible. Top margin trimmed. Moderately rubbed and toned with some soiling throughout. Heavier, uneven toning to folds. Presidential wax seal still affixed. Pencil notation to verso.
