    James K. Polk Military Appointment Signed. One partially-printed vellum page, 15.5" x 17.75", Washington, January 18, 1848, appointing "Rufus Ingalls . . . Assistant Quartermaster with the rank of Captain in the service of the United States." Countersigned by William L. Marcy as secretary of war. Seal of the Department of War at upper left. Smoothed folds. Moderately toned overall. Areas of light toning.

    Rufus Ingalls (1818-1893), a graduate of West Point, served in what is now New Mexico and California during the Mexican War. With the outbreak of the Civil War, Ingalls served as an aide-de-camp to Gen. George B. McClellan and chief quartermaster in the Army of the Potomac. During the war he would be reach a rank of major general by brevet. He remained in the army for another twenty years after the end of the war and, in 1882, was named Quartermaster General of the U.S. Army as a brigadier general. He retired from service the following year.
