    Description

    James K. Polk Endorsement Initialed "J. K. P." as president. Found on the attached blank leaf of a two page letter of recommendation written to Polk from William Leacock. Measuring 8" x 10", Leacock is recommending the bearer of the letter for a position as he has fallen on hard times. Polk in turn refers the man to the Secretary of the Navy on April 14, 1847, in full: "The Rev. Mr. Leacock of Louisville Ky. Referred [?] to the Secretary of the Navy, with the [illegible] that I am personally acquainted with the writer of this letter, and know him to be a pious & excellent man. He is a minister of the Gospel of the Episcopal church." Smoothed folds with light spots of foxing and toning. Adhesive ghosting along the right edge. Chipping along the bottom edge.
