    James K. Polk Autograph Letter Signed. Two pages, 7.75" x 9.5", [Washington], December 12, 1834. Writing to William B. Lewis, second auditor of the Treasury, he says, in part: "By your letter of the 10th...informed that the papers presented at your office by me, connected with the act for the last Session for the relief of the Heirs of James Brown, have been examined; and that the amounts due respectively to Joseph Brown, and to William & George Brown, Anne Anderson & James Brown Collingsworth...are at this time ready to be paid to the above named heirs..." Water damage along the left edge. Folds are weakened and separating. Lower fold detached, but archivally repaired and toned. Edges of folds on recto have also been repaired. Lower right corner damaged. Polk's signature and paraph are bright. Matted with a facsimile copy of the first page of the letter, the original of which can be seen on the verso through a small window, and a portrait of Polk to an overall size of 39.25" x 16.25".
