James K. Polk Autograph Letter Signed as President. One-page of a bifolium, 8" x 9.75". Washington; September 5, 1845. A letter to the Secretary of the Treasury. In full: "Sir: I will thank you to send to me, the papers on file in your Department relating to the appointment of Surveyor at Hartford Connecticut. / Yours respectfully / James K. Polk."

Robert J. Walker (1801-1869) served as Secretary of the Treasury under James Knox Polk and his successor Zachary Taylor. This letter may pertain to Polk patronage activities, since he replaced Penfield Godsell, the surveyor of the port of Hartford, Connecticut, in December of 1845 with Seth Beldon, who served in that post until 1854.

Written on page three of the bifolium in an unknown hand: "Speaker US Reps."

Condition: The letter has horizontal and vertical folds and some toning and faint dampstaining. Mounting remnants along edges on verso. Together with an engraving of Polk.
