Description

James Garfield Document Signed "James A. Garfield" as president. One partially printed page, 8" x 10", on blue paper, Washington, May 5, 1881. It reads, in full:

"I hereby authorize and direct the Secretary of State to cause the Seal of the United States to be affixed to an envelope containing my reply to the letter of King Charles of Romania, announcing the erection of Romania into a Kingdom &c, &c. dated this day, and signed by me; and for so doing this shall be his warrant."

Coming to power as a consequence of the coup d'état of 1866, German Prince Karl of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen replaced elected ruler Prince Alexander John Cuza and became known as Prince Carol I of Romania before the principality was raised to a kingdom in 1881, following the defeat of the Ottoman Turks during the Russo-Turkish War (Romania had fought in the war on the side of Russia). King Carol (Charles) would rule Romania until his death in 1914.

Unevenly toned along the left and top edge. Matted with a photograph Garfield featuring a facsimile signature to an overall size of 18.5" x 15".
