Description

James Garfield Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 5 x 8 inches, no place; May 6, 1871. A letter addressed to "Dear Simkins" telling him that he had inquired about a promotion for him. He writes in part, "He said he liked you and would promote you as soon as he could bring it about without a jar..." Signed, "J. A. Garfield." Matted with an engraving of Garfield to an overall size of 8 ½ x 15 ¼ inches.

Garfield was serving as a congressman from Ohio at this time. Although we could not identify "Simkins," his name appears in Garfield's diary and may have served as his secretary at a later time.

Condition: Ink smear affecting the date. Letter has been affixed to the mat with paper tape. Light soiling along the flattened folds on verso.
