Garfield resigns his military commission to join Congress to support Lincoln's legislative efforts

James Garfield Autograph Letter Signed. Two pages of a bifolium, 5" x 7.75"; Washington; December 8, 1863. A letter to "Dear Philip" regarding his reluctance to resign his military commission and his loyalty to President Lincoln: "It has secured my duty to take my place in Congress and so I have very reluctantly resigned my Major Generalship in the Army. I would much have preferred on personal grounds to remain in the army till the rear guard came home at the end of war - but the President said he did not dare to risk a vote in the House, and so I yielded my own preference. I may go back into the army again in the Spring..." Signed, "J.A. Garfield."

Condition: Toning and wear along the folds resulting in partial separations and foxing thereat. Light soiling, but heavier on the verso of integral, which also has bits of paper loss and creasing at top.
