    James Garfield Autograph Letter Signed "J. A. Garfield" as a U. S. Representative from Ohio. One page, 7.5" x 9.75", Hiram [Ohio], August 24, 1869, to Henry Villard assuring him that "...before the political campaign in this state opens in earnest..," he will "...try to do something towards working up our materials for the Bill and Report in reference to the next Caucus." Minor soiling along the left edge; one instance of ink smudging at lower right.

    More Information: Henry Villard (1835-1900), a German immigrant, was a war correspondent during the American Civil War and Austro-Prussian War before investing in railroads. He later acquired the New York Evening Post and The Nation.
