    Description

    James Garfield Appointment Signed "James A. Garfield" as president. One page, 17" x 14", Washington, June 7, 1881. Appointing "George K. Gilmer . . . Postmaster at Richmond, in the County of Henrico, State of Virginia . . . for and during the term of four years from the thirteenth day of May, 1881." Countersigned by Postmaster General Thomas L. James. Embossed paper Seal of the Post Office Department with attached red ribbons at the lower left. Weakened folds are separating at the edges with minor paper loss at the intersections, though all have been repaired with tape on the verso. Ghosting from the seal at the lower right corner. Soiling along the left edge.

    President James A. Garfield was assassinated three months later by Charles J. Guiteau after serving as president for 200 days. From the Donald P. Dow Collection.
