Description
James Buchanan Four Language Ship's Passport Signed as President. One oversized partially printed page, 22" x 16.75" (sight), New Bedford; May 9, 1859. This passport, printed in French, Spanish, English, and Dutch, authorizes passage for "Wm S. Beebe master or commander of the Ship called the Herald of the burden of 302 82/95 tons, or thereabouts, lying at the present in the port of New Bedford bound for Pacific Ocean and laden with Provisions, stores and utensils for a whaling voyage." Boldly signed, "James Buchanan." Countersigned by Acting Secretary of State John Appleton and Charles B. H. Fessenden as collector of customs of New Bedford. With two blind stamped seals and an embossed paper seal at the margins. The Herald returned to dock in 1863 laden with 765 barrels of sperm oil. The passport has been attractively matted and framed to the overall size of 29.25" x 24.25". Not examined outside of the frame.Condition: Very gently wrinkled along a few edges. Slight offsetting from seal. Minor scattered soiling. Pinhole of loss at intersection of folds. Lightly toned at folds.
