James Buchanan Four-Language Ship's Papers Signed and countersigned by Secretary of State Lewis Cass. One partly-printed page, 22" x 17", October 4, 1858. The document, printed in French, Spanish, English, and Dutch, authorizes passage for J. S. Dormau, "master or commander of the . . . Balaena", then "in the port of New Bedford, bound for Pacific Ocean and laden with Provisions, Stores, and utensils for a whaling voyage." Two blind-embossed seals are intact along the left margin, along with a large paper seal along the lower edge. The document is age-toned with folds. Fine.Auction Info
