Description

James Buchanan Autograph Letter Signed two days before leaving the U. S. Senate to take up his position as U. S. secretary of state. One page, 4.5" x 7", n. p. [Washington], March 3, 1846, to Robert Beale accepting an invitation for dinner. In part: "I have long been threatening to come up & take a purely family dinner with you. I can do so tomorrow or the next day or the next...Let it be private." At the time, Robert Beale was sergeant at arms for the U. S. Senate. Remnant of wax seal on the verso. Light area of soiling, else fine.
