Description

James Buchanan Autograph Letter Signed as secretary of state. One page, 8" x 10", Washington, November 22, 1847, to H. D. McLellan offering him a position in the Treasury Department. In part: "In the State Dept. there are but thirteen clerks & we rarely have occasion to employ others. I, therefore, immediately called upon the Secretary of the Treasury, stated to him my knowledge of your standing and character...He said, he would give you employment as a temporary clerk from the 1 January until the meeting of you legislature at the rate of $4.00 per day; which I hope you accept." Areas of light toning; small stain at upper left edge.
