James Buchanan Autograph Letter Signed While President. One page, 7.375" x 9.5" (sight), Washington [D.C.]; March 13, 1858. Addressed to Mrs. John R. Thomson, President Buchanan transmits his autograph and his compliments. The addressee is presumably Josephine Ward Thomson, wife of New Jersey Senator Thomson, whose family was closely acquainted with Buchanan. It reads, in full:"You ask for my autograph. This is indeed a small favor. If it were far greater, it would be but an inadequate testimonial of the very high esteem & regard which I have ever entertained for you since our first acquaintance." Signed, "James Buchanan".
The letter is handsomely matted and framed with a print of Buchanan to the overall size of 15.5" x 21.5". Not examined outside of the frame.
Condition: Toned with scattered soiling and foxing. Smoothed folds.
