James Buchanan Autograph Letter Signed as President. One page, 6.25" x 8". Washington City; December 8, 1857. A letter to Madame Le Vert, thanking her for a gift of her recent book of her travels in France: "Many thanks for your 'Souvenirs of France.' I should have acknowledged it sooner; but I desired first to read it. This I have found impossible. It is a pleasure in reserve. Meanwhile I accept it with much pleasure as a token of your regard feeling quite confident that any work of yours cannot fail to be sprightly agreeable & instructive."
Condition: The letter has horizontal and vertical folds, and a small tear at left margin affecting a single word. Mounting remnants on the verso at top, and residue from tape on the lower right hand side of the back. The letter is accompanied by an engraving of Buchanan. The engraving was removed from a book and has a ragged edge at right and dark toning at top and right margins.

    More Information:

Octavia Walton Le Vert (1811-1877) was an American socialite who was born in Georgia and married Henry Strachey Le Vert in 1836. She was one of the best known Southern women writers of her age. She traveled often to Europe, where she became well known in several European courts. Her book Souvenirs of Travel, published in 1857, was a chronicle of her recent trip to France. Largely forgotten today, Le Vert was an early supporter of the campaign to save and restore George Washington's Mount Vernon. In his letter, President Buchanan gave the incorrect title of her book.
