    James Buchanan Autograph Letter Signed as President. One page of a bifolium. 8" x 5". June 18, 1859. Letter regarding the petition for commutation of sentence in the murder trial of Cyrus W. Plumer. "I should be glad to see you in relation to extending the time for execution of Plumer. Should W. Lathrop, his spiritual adviser ask it for the purpose of preparing the unhappy man for death, it ought to be granted..." Cyrus Plumer was convicted of murdering the captain of a whaling ship in 1859. He was sentenced to death, but this sentence was commuted by Buchanan after a groundswell of support from the general public.

    Condition: Folded, with light foxing and age toning. Mounting remnants on verso. Very good.
