James Buchanan is appointed Secretary of State

James Buchanan as Secretary of State Document Signed. One page, 8" x 11.5", partially printed, Washington, D.C., March 10, 1845. A "Circular," this document is addressed to "A. D. Mann / US Consul. / Bremen". It reads: "I have the honor to inform you that the President, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate, has appointed me Secretary of State of the United States and that I have this day entered upon the duties of that office." Uneven upper and lower margins with small areas of loss, fold creases, a few small spots of peripheral foxing. Even toning, very good condition. Buchanan served as President Polk's Secretary of State until 1849, overseeing one of young America's more vigorous growth spurts. Buchanan's legacy from this period includes the Oregon Treaty, which finally established a firm boundary between American and British territory in the Pacific Northwest.
