    James A. Garfield Signed Copy of Speech of Hon. James A. Garfield, of Ohio, on the Constitutional Amendment to Abolish Slavery, Delivered in the House of Representatives, January 13, 1865. Washington: McGill & Witherow, 1865. Garfield has signed "Respects of J. A. G." at the upper right corner of the first page. 8vo, 8 pages.

    Garfield had opposed slavery, but never identified as an abolitionist. With a typed letter identifying that this copy has come for the library of Hannibal Hamlin, the first vice president of Abraham Lincoln who served through the Civil War.
