James A. Garfield Letter Signed "J.A. Garfield" as an Ohio Congressman. One page, 5" x 8", Washington, D.C.; April 2, 1878. In a letter addressed to General J.R. Hawley, written in an unknown hand, Garfield discusses trouble occurring at West Point. It reads, in full: "Dear General: I owe you an apology for so long neglecting to answer yours of March 8th. Your suggestions in regard to the assaults upon West Point are very striking and important. I have just completed a second article, for the North American Review, on the Army, in which I have treated somewhat at length the hostility, exhibited in the House, to the Military Academy."

James Garfield served as a member of the House of Representatives from Ohio from 1863 to 1880. He won the presidency the following year, but his term was cut short when he was shot by an assassin on July 2, 1881. He passed away from complications from his wounds on September 19, 1881.

Condition: Toning around the edges, with darker toning at the top left corner. A few small tears and paper loss at the top left corner. Otherwise Good.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
