Description

James A. Garfield Appointment Signed "J. A. Garfield" as Commander-in-Chief of The Army of the Boys in Blue. One partially printed page, 15.75" x 9.75", New York, July 26, 1876, appointing "W. A. Phillips as a Veteran who defended the Government of the United States during the late Rebellion...General Commanding Department of Kansas with the rank of Major General." Blue Seal of The Veterans National Committee at lower left. The Army of the Boys in Blue was a political Union veteran's organization formed the year after the end of the war.

At the time of his appointment, William A. Phillips was a member of the U. S. House of Representatives. Evenly toned. Slight staining near the seal. Tear at lower right corner has been repaired with no affect to the text.
