    Description

    Harry Truman Typed Letter Signed. Two pages on White House letterhead, 8" x 10.5", February 10, 1948. Addressed to Norman Cousins in response to a letter he had written to the president "summarizing trends on American public sentiment on the problem of strengthening the powers and machinery of the United Nations." Cousins had suggested creating a Presidential committee to review the issues and make recommendations. Truman politely that although Presidential committees can be useful, matters of world peace and the role of the United Nations fall well outside the range of his executive powers. He explains: "Its conclusions would have no particular standing abroad. They might, if radical changes were proposed, lead other countries to believe that we had lost faith in the United Nations as it is now constituted."

    Truman outlines the role of the Interim Committee established at the United Nations and asserts that it is his aim to ensure that the U.S. participates fully in the work of the community. He encourages Cousins to proceed with the work he is suggesting as a private citizen: "Studies if the kind you suggest can be very usefully be made by private citizens and organizations. The growth of an informed public opinion on this subject will provide the surest foundation for our progress toward world order in the future... Harry Truman."

    Following WWII and the dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, a new precedent for warfare and military armament was set. With the world powers looking for a way to return to peace and stability, the United Nations was formed. Truman signed the United Nations Charter in August 1945, as the Second World War drew to an end. The U.S. would be the first nation to ratify the charter and join the U.N. Ex. Norman Cousins Estate.

    Condition: Lightly toned with usual mail folds. Each page of the letter is mounted to a board to an overall size of 8.5" x 11". Backing material is also toned.
