Harry Truman Typed Letter Signed Awarding the Legion of Merit to Major General Dmitri Drubushef, Assistant Commanding General of the 5th Guard Airborne Division and the Original Bestowal Document. Harry Truman Typed Letter Signed Awarding the Legion of Merit to Major General Dmitri Drubushef, Assistant Commanding General of the 5th Guard Airborne Division and the Original Bestowal Document. The letter is on White House stationary, 8" x 10.5", Washington, n.d.. The bestowal document is partially printed and signed by Robert P. Patterson as Secretary of War and Major General Edward Witsell as Adjutant General, 12" x 10", April 9, 1946, Washington. Both documents have light pencil notations in Russian, else fine.

During the spring of 1945 the 5th Guard Airborne Division participated in the advance of Soviet General Fyodor Tolbukhin's 3rd Ukrainian Front through western Hungary. On March 30, the advancing Soviets were ready to advance into Austria and take Vienna. The Germans desperately prepared defensive positions in an attempt to guard the city against the fast arriving Soviets. The battle for the Austrian capital was characterized in some cases by fierce urban combat. Vienna finally fell when the last defenders in the city surrendered on April 13. The troops of the 3rd Ukrainian Front then advanced on Linz and Graz. The capture of Austrian territory gave Stalin a valuable bargaining chip for subsequent postwar negotiations with his Allies.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
