Description

Harry Truman Signed Typed Contract with Signed Note.
Two pages, 8.5" x 14", no place; no date, [September 25, 1916]. A contract signed with David H. Morgan and Jerry Culbertson forming the partnership Morgan and Company. The business sought to "engage in a general brokerage business, buying and selling oil lands, leases, production, properties, stocks and securities and any and all other investments of whatever nature on a commission basis or otherwise..." Truman was established as treasurer of the company, with Culbertson as secretary and Morgan and president.

On the back of the contract Truman has handwritten a note to Morgan writing, "Dave: - This is an interesting document. As you will remember we had leases in Greenwood Co., KS. and Bowie County Tex - both if I remember correctly afterward produced immense quantities of oil. I went to war and things happened over which we had no control. Maybe I wouldn't be Pres if we'd hit. HST." Although Truman was able to break even with the amount he invested in the venture, the company was ultimately dissolved in 1919.
