    Description

Harry Truman November 6, 1950 Address Signed "Harry Truman." Four pages, 8" x 14", Independence, Missouri; November 6, 1950. An address given at a Liberty Bell Ceremony, honoring the relationship between the U.S. and the French. Truman went on to say, "This bell comes to the people of Independence as a gift from the people of Annecy, France...it is not far from the Vosges Mountains, where the 129th Field Artillery - in which I have the honor of serving - fought in the first World War, and where a good many American boys fought in the second World War. In both those wars, the people of the United States and the people of France fought on the same side - on the side of freedom and liberty. Today, the people of France and the people of the United States are still on the same side - on the side of freedom and liberty. This freedom we believe is symbolized by this bell." The speech has been signed on the last page in black ink.

Condition: The address has flattened folds, with some light toning around the edges. Some bumping at the lower right corner, with some creasing. Light soiling and blue ink marks in some places. Overall very fine.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
