    Harry S. Truman Masonic Certificate Signed as Grand Master, 16.5" x 13.5", October 22, 1960. Truman signed this Freemasonry certificate in the upper left corner seven years after leaving the White House. It is addressed to Julia Clara Stowell and reads in part:

    "From the Grand Orient at Charleston in the State of South Carolina of the Supreme Council, Mother Council of the World, of the Inspectors General, Knights Commanders of the House of the Temple of Solomon of the XXXIIId Degree of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry for the Southern Jurisdiction of the United States. . . . Know ye that Julia Clara Stowell whose name is written by her in the margin hereof, being of the age of Forty years, and residing at Fort Leavenworth in the State of Kansas is the Wife of Bro. Frederick Milton Stowell who is a Master of the Royal Secret of the 32° Degree of the said Rite of our obedience in good standing . . . and that she is entitled to the respect and consideration, and in case of need, to the protection, safeguard and assistance of all Freemasons."

    The document is also signed by the grand secretary general and the sovereign grand commander. Gold seal is in the lower left corner of the certificate. Truman was initiated as a Freemason into the Belton Lodge of Missouri in 1909. He was active in Freemasonry throughout the rest of his life, even receiving a fifty-year award in 1959, one year before signing this certificate. In 1945, Truman was selected an Honorary Grand Master of the International Supreme Council. This yellow certificate, in mostly red ink, contains various Masonic vignettes and is affixed to a slightly larger paperboard backing.
