Description
Harry S. Truman. Autograph letter signed ("Harry S. Truman") as President. 2 pages, (5 x 8 inches), The White House, 19 June 1949, to [Julius Ochs] Adler. On White House stationery. Smoothed folds.President Truman apologizes to the general manager of The New York Times for his language in an earlier disparaging letter.
President Truman writes, in full:
"Dear Mr. Adler:
Some days ago I complained, in very uncomplimentary language about a certain editorial piece in the Times. And I wrote you a rather curt reply to my complaint. Today I am expressing thanks and appreciation for the special article in the Times Sunday Magazine about Margaret. I am sure my 'Kentucky Feelings' were on top when I wrote the complaint. Hope you'll forget both the complaint and the reply to your letter.
You hit me where I like in the piece about my daughter.
Sincerely,
Harry S. Truman"
The article Truman refers to regarding his daughter, Margaret, appeared in The New York Times magazine the same day he wrote this letter. It was entitled "Portrait of a Young Career Woman" and discussed her professional singing career. Truman, always the protective and proud father, was clearly feeling contrite after reading the complimentary article and penned this apologetic response to Mr. Adler.
When it came to Margaret and the press, Truman's "Kentucky Feelings" often got the better of him. The most famous occasion came in 1950 when he created a minor scandal for his administration by threatening a music critic with the Washington Post who negatively reviewed Margaret's performance at Constitution Hall. He called the man an "eight ulcer man on four ulcer pay" and "a frustrated old man who wishes he could have been successful" before threatening him. "Some day I hope to meet you. When that happens you'll need a new nose, a lot of beef steak for black eyes, and perhaps a supporter below!" "Kentucky Feelings," indeed!
