    Description

Grover Cleveland: Group of Three Autograph Letters Signed. In each of the three letters, Cleveland writes to friend Winfield Robbins, first as governor of New York and Democratic candidate for president of the United States (first two letters, dating September 22 and 26, 1884) and lastly as president-elect (final letter, dated January 4, 1885). In his first letter, Cleveland writes regarding a gift of a clock and his marital status, in part: "I have always understood that I should not have . . . the clock until I was married. I am with you in this state but I think, and perhaps you do, in view of the recent proofs of the disadvantage of bachelorhood, in a candidate. . . . I shall get married when I please." Four days later, he writes again, but being rushed for time, he can only say that he is "much pleased to know that I am to see you so soon and that the arrangements you suggest delights me." In his final letter, Cleveland, now U.S. president-elect, writes concerning appointments in his administration which he hopes to bestow upon his friends.

Each letter measures 5" x 7.75" to 5.75" x 9" and is written on the New York governor's own letterhead. Each exhibits the usual folds and is accompanied by the original transmittal envelopes.
