Grover Cleveland Autograph Letter Signed. Three pages (of a bifolium), 4.5" x 6.75", Marion, Massachusetts; June 18, 1890. A letter to Samuel P. Curran concerning an intended gift of stock that Cleveland will not accept.

    Dear Sir

I received the letter which I enclose, to-day.

You spoke of some stock in a paper which you accidentally thought you enclosed. Nothing of the kind came with the letter and I am glad of it for I certainly would not consent to your donating it to me. I have no doubt you intended well, but this is no reason why you should give me any of the stock of your paper and I hope you will not further insist on doing so.

This letter is written to inform you that I have received no stock and that I should feel obliged to return it if it had come to my hand.

    Yours truly

    Grover Cleveland

Cleveland, who was in between two non-consecutive terms as president of the United States; at the time he wrote this letter, the former president was residing in Marion, Massachusetts, where he rented a house for the summer during the late 1880s. Cleveland served as president of the United States from 1885 to 1889 and from 1892 to 1896. Ex. R. Douglas Stuart.

Condition: The letter has a horizontal fold and is worn at the intersection of the fold and the crease of the bifolium.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
