Description

Washington signed Society of Cincinnati diploma awarded to a Revolutionary War surgeon

George Washington Signed Society of Cincinnati Diploma appointing Dr. Moses Scott a member of the Society. Oversized oblong folio, 20" x 14.75", Mount Vernon, May 24, 1784. Countersigned by Henry Knox as Secretary. A most attractive document with beautifully engraved patriotic vignettes and calligraphied script. Dr. Moses Scott served as Senior Physician and Surgeon of Hospitals of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. He was present at the battles of Trenton, Princeton, Brandywine, and Germantown. This handsome document is framed to an overall size of 29" x 33.5". Document has buckling to surface, and Washington's signature has somewhat faded; although it remains visible it would grade at about a 6.
