Description
George Washington Receipt Signed with his Full Signature. One page, 6.5" x 3"(sight), n. p, November, 1774. Written in Washington's hand the month after attending the First Continental Congress and before the Revolution began in earnest, it reads in full:"I do hereby acknowledge, that I received from George Washington, the sum of Thirty nine pounds to pay for 390 lbs of Feathers for the use of Mr. John Parke Custis in November 1774."
Countersigned by Washington's distant cousin, Lund Washington, who oversaw the workings of Mount Vernon while Washington was fighting in the Revolution. John Parke Custis, the adopted son of George Washington, married in February of 1774 against the wishes of George and his wife, Martha. It is probable that the feathers would have been used in manufacturing down pillows or mattresses for his new household.
Elegantly matted and framed to an overall size of 14" x 10.5". Full signatures of the first president are uncommon and make this a unique piece to add to your collection.
