Description

George Washington Partial Document Signed as President of the Potomac Company. One page, 4.75" x 10", no place [Alexandria, Virginia]; August 7, 1786. A partial manuscript document relating to a payment made on behalf of the Potomac Company. It appears to authorize the receipt of "57 Cords of Wood." Signed "Go: Washington" on verso as president of the company. Countersigned by Thomas Pollock as overseer and John Fitzgerald and George Gilpin as directors. The document is affixed to a mat board with mounting squares but is easily removable. Together with two engravings of Washington and a bronze George Washington "Time Increases His Fame" medal. They are matted to the overall size of 18.5" x 12.25".

The Potomac Company was formed in 1785 to help facilitate navigation and trade along the Potomac River for the benefit of both Virginia and Maryland and to aid in western expansion. It was responsible for the Patowmack Canal and several skirting canals, which succeeded in opening the river up for the shipment of bulk goods. The company was taken over by the Chesapeake and Ohio Company in 1828.

Condition: Document has been cut, reordered, and glued in such a way to present signatures for display purposes, affecting the text of the original document. Pencil notations to recto and verso. Small area of dried adhesive to verso of document, presumably from mounting the medal which is now detached. Toned and sunned with light soiling.
