Description
George Washington Letter Signed as Commander-in Chief of the Continental Army. One page, 7.25" x 6", "Head Quarters West Point," October 3, 1779. It reads, in full:"Sir: I expect that Col. [Moses] Hazen will be at or near Hartford on his march to join this Army. You will be pleased to forward this to him wherever he may be. As it is of consequence I am to request that you will lose no time in giving it a conveyance to Col. Hazen."
Prior to August 1779, Hazen and his men had been hard at work constructing the Bayley Hazen military road (in actuality continuing work on a road started in 1776 by Jacob Bayley that was to head north from Newbury and terminate in Quebec) with the help of Timothy Bedel and his men. It was the intention of Washington to use the road to launch another invasion of Canada, as the first had failed three years before. In August, with word of a British force amassing to capture the construction crew, work was abandoned and Hazen fled south. The entire construction project turned out to be a farce. Washington had never intended on sending an invasion army along the route. Its sole purpose, which was highly successful, was to divert British attention from launching their own invasion. Hazen's regiment met up with Washington and wintered with him at Morristown, New Jersey. Nehemiah Hubbard (1752-1837) joined the Continental Army in 1776 and held both paymaster and quartermaster posts.
Condition: Smoothed folds; edges are lightly toned. Adhesive staining along the right margin, not affecting the text. Few spots of foxing present.
