Description

George Washington Franking Signature on a cover, 5 ½ x 4 inches, no place, no date. An address panel in Washington's hand: "To David Ross Esq.r / Brigade Major / at / Philadelphia." Signed, "Go: Washington." Matted with a large engraving of the President to the overall size of 20 ½ x 29 inches.

David Ross was a major in the Continental Army with whom Washington had served since the Virginia Militia. The National Archives holds a number of letters between the two men spanning from 1757 to 1789. The cover is addressed to Ross as Brigade Major at Philadelphia making this cover likely to date from the Revolutionary War. Ross later served as a delegate for Maryland to the Continental Congress from 1787 to 1789.

Condition: Creased along folds with toning. Foxing and soiling along the center and bottom margin. There is a tear down the center that has been repaired and runs through the "t" in Washington's signature. The top right corner may be replaced in facsimile. Not examined outside of the frame.
