DescriptionGeorge Washington Franking Signature on a Cover Addressed to Thomas Jefferson. Unfolded to an overall size of 13.5" x 8.25". Signed "Go: Washington" in the lower left corner and addressed entirely in his hand "To / His Excellency Thomas Jefferson Esq / Governor of the State of Virginia / at / Richmond." Docketed at the lower right corner "Genl Washington / Dec 10 1780 / & recd Jany / 81 / Deposit of Specifics." In the upper right corner is written "On public Service." Remnant of a red wax seal near the lower edge.
According to the Report of the Library Board of the Virginia State Library (page 85), Washington's letter to Jefferson, dated December 10, 1780, "refers Jefferson to Greene for information as to the supply depots of the Southern army." At the time of his writing, Washington was in winter quarters at Morristown, New Jersey.
Condition: Smoothed folds. Areas of paper loss, small tears, and separation of the folds have been repaired with archival tissue on the verso. Three spots of staining from the red wax seal.
