William Augustus Washington (1757-1810) was the sixth son of George Washington's older half-brother Augustine. During the Revolutionary War, William Augustine served in the 3rd Virginia Regiment and was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in 1778. He was taken prisoner by the British in September 1781 and remained a prisoner until the end of the war. He was buried at Mount Vernon.

Rufus King (1755-1827) was an American lawyer, politician, and diplomat. He attended the Continental Congress as a delegate from Massachusetts. He attended the Constitutional Convention and signed the Constitution. A Federalist like Washington, King served New York as a U.S. Senator from 1789-1796 and from 1813-1825. He was appointed by President Washington as a minister to Great Britain in 1796, serving until 1803. He later served in that same post from 1825-1826.

A fine letter in which President Washington writes a fellow Federalist on behalf of his nephew.

Condition: The letter has horizontal and vertical folds, with mat burn resulting from previous framing. Two tiny mounting remnants at top on verso. Accompanied by engravings of Rufus King and Washington.
