George Washington Address Panel Addressed in His Hand and Signed with a Free Frank Signature. Folded down to an overall size of 4.5" x 3". Boldly signed "Go: Washington" near the lower left corner and "Free" in the upper right. Addressed entirely in his hand from Alexandria, Virginia, on April 27 to "Col. Clem Biddle / in / Philadelphia." Remnant of a red wax seal on the verso.Col. Clement Biddle (1740-1814) served under Washington as the commissary general at Valley Forge and fought in the battles of Princeton, Brandywine, Germantown, and Monmouth. He resigned from the Continental Army in 1780 and later served as the first U.S. Marshal for the state of Pennsylvania.
A scarce free frank from Washington as an ex-president. First sold by Siegel Auction Galleries during their 2002 Rarities sale and again during their November 2004 Dr. John L. Robertson Collection of United States Free Franks sale.
Condition: Smoothed folds. Uneven toning. Slight smudging of the ink of the "G" in Washington's signature and in "Philadelphia."
